17th century Tabernacle Frame with 19th c Academic Study
In remarkable condition, this tabernacle frame is a gorgeous example of a Renaissance archetype. The picture frame began as an offshoot of architecture and then transitioned into a more decorative (and supportive) adjunct. This frame shows a step from aedicule — an architectural inset in which an urn or a statue might be displayed — to tabernacle frame featuring many of the same elements.
All is intact; however, the top right inner panel of the pillar seems to have been replaced (it is a different color than its left counterpart). Otherwise, there is beautiful carving, punch work, and sgraffito. The painted shields are a nice decorative touch and the original wrought iron hanger beautifully completes the package. An exemplary piece.
The charcoal study — under museum glass — is an excellent example of a 19th c academic drawing. An incomplete study, it nonetheless shows beautiful detail and fine sense of proportion.
