18th c Portrait in 17th c Sansovino Frame

$9,800.00

This is a pairing I made several years ago that still has a noble feel to it. The Sansovino frame is in itself a museum-worthy piece, as these rare 17th c frames are nearly the ur-frame for Renaissance portraiture. Gilt highlights on the volutes and scrolls against the unfinished wood give this piece a simultaneously rich and restrained presence. The oil on canvas of a bearded man against a rich green background has always rung true to me. The walnut liner was custom made by P.H. Miller Studio in Berryville, VA. Overall dim: 31” w x 35” h
